Shadow Silhouette Production
These characters were
used in a shadow silhouette animation, inspired from Lotte Reiniger’s work.
Both characters were cut from a piece of A3 black card, from the character designs
of the man and the female I had created from my sketch book They were
photocopied onto 2 pieces of A4 paper and were placed onto black card, scalpels
were used to cut around the silhouettes.
Shortly after cutting the male and female silhouettes their limbs needed to be articulated, specifically their knees and elbows to make them move more fluid. This was done through making holes in our characters at the points we wanted the limbs to articulate, these holes were then filled with a thread of metal wire which we then folded over with pliers to keep the character models secure. This maintained the integrity of the model and was able to animate the characters over multiple days without the model breaking or becoming flimsy, using wire gave the model a subtle appearance rather than using brass splitting pins which can be unappealing to look at and proof distracting when shown in an animation.
